Biden Cancer Initiative

How do we coalesce national attention around creating actionable solutions in the fight against cancer?

Having previously worked on the White House Cancer Moonshot Initiative with Vice President Biden, the Biden Cancer Initiative turned to Wondros once more for creative ways to inspire, inform, and ignite a movement focused on improving the cancer journey for all.

Opportunity:

Wondros knew that a different kind of story about the cancer journey was waiting to be told by celebrating the diverse voices and expertise of stakeholders within the cancer care and research spaces.

Approach:

Building on the Initiative’s #cancerFIERCE awareness effort, we captured unique stories about cancer’s devastating impact and the resilience needed to navigate its twists and turns.

We told the story of challenges inherent to access to care from the perspective of two oncologists moving from their Johns Hopkins practices to start the first-ever specialty cancer clinic in the Navajo Nation. We brought to life the promise of medical progress from the experience of former NFL defensive end Devon Still, who was his daughter’s fiercest advocate as she effectively battled her cancer diagnosis. We also spotlighted the financial toxicity of a cancer diagnosis from the experiences of the Longo family.

In addition to story vignettes, we developed 12 issue-specific expert modules, each featuring an expert panel and a discussion guide for community organizers. These stories and modules set the foundation for the Biden Cancer Summit held September 2018 with an anchor event in Washington, D.C. and at more than 450 Community Summits all around the country.

Impact

The stories and modules we produced helped set up real, raw, and relevant discussions at community and national settings. What emerged was a shared narrative focused on urgency and action, tying us all together, fierce in our commitment to improve the cancer experience for all.
