Wondros Chief Design Officer Appointed to City of Austin’s Commission on Veterans Affairs

Amber Schleuning, Wondros’ Chief Design Officer and head of our Human-Centered Research and Experience Design Team, was recently appointed to serve on the City of Austin’s Commission on Veterans Affairs.

As a Commission member, Schleuning will serve a term of four years and will help the Commission evaluate and recommend policies and practices to help improve the wellbeing of veterans in the Austin area.

“I’m excited to continue to serve veterans and their families, people who have sacrificed so much,” says Schleuning, a veteran herself who did two tours in Iraq leading teams with the U.S. Army as a combat engineer. Prior to joining Wondros, Schleuning also served as Executive Director of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Center for Innovation, helping to scale design and innovation capacity across the largest integrated health system in the U.S.

“It’s important to listen and understand what’s most important so we can advocate not just for them, but with them. “

“My goal is to impress upon anyone I meet that veterans are not a monolith but a varied group knit together by the experience of service. They have different needs, priorities, and motivations and it’s important to listen and understand what’s most important so we can advocate not just for them, but with them. During my time with the Commission, I will prioritize issues like mental health access, alternative mental health therapies science, rural health, and suicide prevention.”
